TRACK ONE
“Faith in Action in Today’s World”
in the Multi-purpose Room at 10:45am
Caring for Creation Sundays – Don’t miss the display
in the narthex.
June 13 and 20 – Food, Inc. video – Our industrialized
food system abuses animals, has adversely
affected human and animal health, polluted air and
water, and degraded soil. Learn how the choices you
make at every meal can change the system and
improve health. Discussions will be lead by Steve Ing
and Joanne Leussing from the Environmental
Stewardship Team.
June 27 – Dr. Greg Hitzhusen will speak about a
faith-based approach to environmental concerns – a
timely topic that should interest all Gethsemane
members. Dr. Greg Hitzhusen, Executive Director of
Ohio Interfaith Power and Light, is also on the faculty
of The Ohio State University, in the School of Environment
and Natural Resources, where he is developing a
partnership between the Ohio Council of Churches
and Ohio State University Extension to provide environmental
resources to faith communities in Ohio. Dr.
Hitzhusen has a B.S. in ecology from Cornell University,
an M.Div, concentrating in eco-theology from
Yale Divinity School, and a Ph.D. in faith based environmental
education (Cornell). Greg has taught
courses on creation care and outdoor ministry at Yale
Divinity School and Wesley Theological Seminary, and
lives with his wife and two sons in Columbus.
TRACK TWO
“From Here to Community”
in the GLC Library at 10:45 am
June 13 and 20 – The two sessions in June continue
to look at Christians in our individualistic society. “The
Culture of Separation – what about Others?” provides
a look at the pressures of life that separate us from
others and explores how Gethsemane can provided
the connection to God and to others. “Social Capital –
Lost and Found” includes a story of an unexpected
Thanksgiving visitor who is new to the city, has little
social capital (connection with others), and needs an
AA meeting that day.
June 27 – The community of faith is the connecting
link that encourages and supports us as we move from
focusing on our own self-interest to having concern
for others. This group will join the Caring for Creation
class to hear Greg Hitzhusen’s ideas for putting into
action our concern for the environment we all share.
During July and August, the adult Education hour at
10:45 am will be Story Time: stories in the news,
family stories, Christian reflections, stories from the
bible and Literature, and a video reprise of some of
the stories from the Faith Testimony Series shared in
Worship – part of Gethsemane’s celebration of 60
years as a faith community in 2008. Watch the bulletin
for details. Come whenever you can.
