Habitat for Humanity

Through the Worthington Partnership of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Columbus and Thrivent Builds, members from Gethsemane help to build homes for low-income families. These families contribute a minimum of 250 hours of “sweat equity” toward their home. Working alongside future homeowners and volunteers from other organizations and churches, several people from Gethsemane regularly help with the construction.

Work on the homes takes place on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday from April through autumn. Experience with home repair or building is helpful, but not necessary to help with the build. (Knowledgeable leaders from Habitat direct the construction.) Tools and equipment such as hard hats are provided. The home sites vary from year to year in the greater Columbus area. Volunteers are also needed to provide lunch for the work crew. This is a great opportunity to get to know more about how Habitat works or to get involved if you cannot swing a hammer. Habitat also needs volunteers year round for family advocacy, office work, event planning, and ReStore, Habitat’s home improvement resale store.

To help on the Habitat work crew or in any other capacity, look for information at Gethsemane in early spring or contact the Mission and Ministry Committee
